Privacy isn't a feature. It's the foundation.

Umbra blocks ads and trackers before they load, isolates every tab, strips tracking parameters, and encrypts your browsing history — all without slowing you down.

Features

Everything you need.
Nothing you don't.

Built from the ground up for privacy — not bolted on as an afterthought.

🛡

Content Blocking

50,000+ rules compiled directly into the WebKit engine. Ads and trackers are blocked before they even load — not just hidden.

🔒

Tab Isolation

Every tab gets its own ephemeral data store. Cookies, cache, and storage are wiped when you close a tab. Sites can't track you across sessions.

🎭

Anti-Fingerprinting

Canvas noise, WebGL renderer spoofing, and navigator property normalisation make your browser harder to fingerprint across sites.

🔐

Encrypted History

Your bookmarks and browsing history are encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The key lives in your system keychain — never on disk in plaintext.

HTTPS-First

Every connection is automatically upgraded to HTTPS. If a site can't support it, you're warned before you proceed.

✂️

UTM Stripping

Tracking parameters like utm_source, fbclid, and gclid are stripped from every URL before the page loads.

📖

Reader Mode

Strip away clutter and read articles in a clean, distraction-free dark view. One click, any page.

🌐

Encrypted DNS

DNS queries go over HTTPS to Cloudflare, Google, or Quad9 — your ISP can't see what sites you're looking up.

📥

Download Manager

Built-in download manager with progress tracking, file chooser, and reveal-in-finder support.

Privacy by
architecture.

Umbra isn't a Chromium fork with an ad blocker bolted on. It's built on WebKit — the same engine as Safari — with privacy engineered into every layer.

  • Content blocking rules compiled into WebKit's native engine — not JavaScript-based filtering
  • Ephemeral WebsiteDataManager per tab — identical to Safari's private browsing isolation model
  • No telemetry, no crash reporting, no usage analytics sent anywhere
  • Open blocklist format — same WebKit JSON used by Safari Content Blockers
  • Blocklists updated daily from umbra.norsehor.se with checksum verification
  • Local keychain storage for encryption keys — no cloud sync of sensitive data
